Fall 2009
Past Issues — By admin on September 4, 2009 8:00 amThis issue marks the end of the first year of growing this baby called Routes. Among many things, I have learned that it takes more than a great idea and lots of enthusiasm to grow a company, it ‘takes a village’.
Not one for the traditional, the team and I dragged an old sofa out to this photoshoot. In the magazine you will see some of us from the Routes’ village. These brilliant, energetic and talented people (and others who couldn’t be there) are those who make each issue a success. A big-hearted thank you to all, you amaze me.
The cover story evolved from exploring the films made locally to an interview with locations manager, Ben Owens who informed us of a crisis within the industry. Set designers, actors and local businesses, all benefit from the film industry. This is a look at the state of the industry and why, at this time, there are only these two productions in all of Alberta and 37 productions on the go in B.C. Ben became our cowboy fighting for the industry in our mock western photo shoot at CL Ranch near Bragg Creek.
Our artist feature this issue is singer, and local legend, George Canyon. Photographer Neville Palmer brilliantly captured George in both words and images for this article.
Readers have been asking, so we are delivering a family section. Always somethiing a little different, yet we will strive to be inspirational and encouraging with a column that reflects the funny side of parenting like the article from writer Pat Fream.
Another new item this year is Finding Roots: A series on our small towns. This is a look into what our little towns among foothills are all about. Melanie Collison takes a look at Okotoks. This once small town has grown up and become a regional hub to southern Alberta.
Fall is my favourite time of year with cool breezes in the trees, turning of the leaves turning and a smell of new markers and kids back in school! Enjoy these dwindling warm evenings with a few more barbeques with friends and remember to balance the back to school rush by getting out to the many fall harvest festivals, dances and concerts all going on in your back yard, the foothills.
